The residents of the built-up area Trokavec, in the Czech Republic, have rejected plans to deploy a radar station in the area. During yesterday’s referendum on the issue 71 out of the 72 participants voted against the plans. Washington feels the radar should become an element of the US ABM system that the US plans to deploy in Eastern Europe. But the Trokavec population fears the deployment will cause excessive radiation and major interference with the TV signal reception and mobile telephone communication operation. Moscow sees the likely deployment of the ABM system near Russia’s border as a threat to this country’s security.
