Science Daily: Czech villagers oppose US radar base

PRAGUE, Czech Republic, March 19 (UPI) -- Villagers of a southwestern Czech town voted against stationing a U.S. radar post as part of an anti-missile defense system in Europe.

PRAGUE, Czech Republic, March 19 (UPI) -- Villagers of a southwestern Czech town voted against stationing a U.S. radar post as part of an anti-missile defense system in Europe.

The local move was only of symbolic value as a final decision on deploying the U.S. radar base on Czech territory will be taken by the Czech parliament, Prague Radio reported Monday.

With a population of 100, the village of Trokavec, 45 miles southwest of Prague, demonstrated its opposition to the U.S. radar base with a 71-1 vote out of the 90 eligible voters.

U.S. officials are considering stationing the radar base in the Brdy military district, about 1 mile from Trokavec.

A base with interceptor missiles is planned to be stationed in neighboring Poland.
