Oman: Czech villagers against US

TROKAVEC, Czech Republic — Inhabitants of a small Czech village voted yesterday in a local referendum on a US proposal to construct part of its anti-missile defence system on a nearby army base. A total of 90 residents in Trokavec are eligible to vote on the proposed radar site selected by US military experts at the base, two kilometres from the village. Voting began at 0700 GMT.

On the U.S. missile defense shield, Kaczynski and his twin brother, Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski, did not yield to Merkel, insisting they were not prepared to place the system inside NATO as Germany has proposed. The United States intends to deploy 10 of the shield's interceptors in Poland and part of the radar system in the CzechRepublic as part of its plan to counter the threat of long-range attacks from Iran.
